Sarah-Sonia Balan

Mathematics · Education · Writing

I’m Sonia, a Mathematics student at the University of Manchester interested in abstract algebra, mathematics education, and the intellectual history behind mathematical ideas.

Around the university, I work behind the scenes in roles such as PASS Coordinator, Student Rep Coordinator, Library Student Team member, MathSoc organiser, and part of the team running the Manchester Interdisciplinary Mathematics Undergraduate Conference.

In May 2025, I was awarded 3rd place in the University of Manchester’s “Volunteer of the Year – Student of the Year (Individual)” category, recognising work undertaken that supports other students. This meant a lot to me, because so much of what I do is driven by wanting to make the student experience kinder, more accessible, and more communal.

Outside mathematics, I care deeply about writing, philosophy, and creative reflection. I’m originally from Romania, but Manchester is my chosen home!
